They ate some of the yield of the land of Canaan during that year.(Joshua 5: 12)

Israel's weary wanderings were over, and the promised rest was attained. There would be no more moving tents, fiery serpents, fierce Amalekites, and howling wildernessed. They came to the land that flowed with milk and honey, and they ate some of the produce of the land (Joshua5:11). Perhaps this year, beloved Christain reader, this may be your case or mine. The prospect is joyful, and if faith is active, it will yield absolute delight. To be with Jesus in the rest that remains for the people of God (Hebrews4:9) is an encouraging hope indeed, and to expect this glory so soon is a double delight.

  Unbelief shudders at the Jordan River that still flows between us and the good land, but let us rest assured that we have already experienced more affliction than death at its worst can cause us. Let us dispel every fearful thought and rejoice with exceedingly great joy in the prospect that this year we will begin to the forever with the Lord(1 Thessalonians4:17).

  A part of the multitude of saints will remain this year on earth to do service for their Lord. If we are in this group, there is no reason why the New Year's text should not still be true. We who have believed enter that rest (Hebrews4:3). The Holy Spirit is the pledge of our inheritance. He gives us "glory begun below."(This phrase is from Issac Watt's hymn "Come, We That Love the Lord.") In heaven they are secure, and on earth we are preserved in Christ Jesus. There they triumph over their enemies, and we have victories too. Celestial spirits enjoy communion with their Lord, and this is not denied to us here on earth. There they rest in His love, and here we have perfect peace in Him. They sing His praise in heaven, and it is our privilege to do the same here. We will gather celestial fruits on earthly ground this year, where faith and hope have made the desert like the garden of the Lord. Man ate angels' food long ago, and why can we not do so now? 

  O for grace to feed on Jesus and to eat of the fruit of the land of Cannan this year!

이스라엘의 지친 방황은 끝났고, 약속된 안식이 이루어졌습니다. 더 이상 천막을 옮기거나, 불뱀을 치거나, 사나운 아말렉 사람들이나, 광야에서 울부짖는 소리가 들리지 않을 것입니다. 그들은 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅에 도착하여 그 땅의 소산을 먹었습니다(여호수아 5:11). 사랑하는 그리스도인 독자 여러분, 어쩌면 올해는 여러분과 저의 상황이 비슷할지도 모릅니다. 그 전망은 기쁜 것이며, 믿음이 살아 있다면 절대적인 기쁨을 가져다줄 것입니다. 하나님의 백성을 위해 남아 있는 안식 안에서 예수님과 함께하는 것(히브리서 4:9)은 참으로 격려가 되는 소망이며, 이 영광을 곧 기대하는 것은 두 배의 기쁨입니다.

우리와 좋은 땅 사이를 여전히 흐르는 요단 강 앞에서 불신앙은 몸서리치지만, 우리는 이미 최악의 죽음이 초래할 수 있는 것보다 더 큰 고난을 경험했다는 것을 확신해야 합니다. 모든 두려움을 떨쳐 버리고, 올해 주님과 함께 영원히 거할 것이라는 전망에 큰 기쁨으로 기뻐합시다(데살로니가전서 4:17).

많은 성도들 중 일부는 올해 이 땅에 남아 주님을 섬길 것입니다. 만약 우리가 이 무리에 속한다면, 새해 말씀이 여전히 참되다는 데는 아무런 이유가 없습니다. 믿는 우리는 그 안식에 들어갑니다(히브리서 4:3). 성령은 우리 유업의 보증이십니다. 그분은 우리에게 "아래로부터 시작된 영광"(이 구절은 아이작 와트의 찬송가 "주를 사랑하는 우리여 오라"에서 따온 것입니다)을 주십니다. 하늘에서 그들은 안전하고, 땅에서 우리는 그리스도 예수 안에서 보호받습니다. 그곳에서 그들은 원수들을 이기고, 우리도 승리합니다. 천상의 영들은 주님과 교제하며, 이는 이 땅에서 우리에게도 허락되지 않습니다. 그곳에서 그들은 그분의 사랑 안에 안식하며, 우리는 그분 안에서 완전한 평화를 누립니다. 그들은 하늘에서 그분을 찬양하며, 우리도 이곳에서 그분을 찬양하는 특권을 누립니다. 믿음과 소망이 사막을 주님의 동산처럼 만든 이 땅에서 올해 우리는 하늘의 열매를 거둘 것입니다. 사람은 오래전에 천사의 양식을 먹었는데, 왜 우리는 지금 그렇게 할 수 없겠습니까?

오, 올해 예수님을 먹고 가나안 땅의 열매를 먹을 수 있는 은혜가 있기를!
